Life has a way of surprising you when you least expect it. For me, what began as a love for Baroque-inspired piano compositions during my school days in Cornwall has transformed into a full-fledged career in music. Along the way, I’ve drawn from my previous life in marketing and fundraising, blending those skills with my passion for writing and performing. It’s a delicate balance, one that involves not just studio time and creativity, but also long walks with my corgi—who’s quickly become the unofficial mascot of my music sessions.
From Fundraising to Composing
Before I dove headfirst into music, I spent over a decade working in marketing and fundraising, managing campaigns and connecting with people to bring projects to life. Those experiences taught me a lot about storytelling and building relationships, skills that have proven invaluable in my music career. Crafting a song isn’t so different from crafting a marketing pitch—it’s all about evoking emotion, connecting with your audience, and delivering something memorable.
I still rely on those skills today, whether it’s promoting a new single or planning a fundraising campaign for a cause close to my heart. For example, running a charity performance or leveraging streaming platforms for my music feels like a natural extension of my previous career. It’s not just about making music—it’s about sharing it in a way that resonates with others.
The Studio: A Place for Music and Companionship
Creating music can be an intense and solitary process, but I’m lucky to have a little company in the studio. My corgi, who’s both my walking buddy and my biggest fan, has a knack for knowing when to nudge me out of a creative rut. Whether she’s curled up under the piano bench or enthusiastically wagging her tail to a new track, her presence keeps me grounded and reminds me to take breaks.
Those breaks often involve walks that clear my head and give me fresh ideas. I’ve found that some of my best lyrics and melodies come to me while strolling through the park or simply watching her chase after birds. Life and creativity seem to flow better when there’s balance, and having her around is a big part of that.
Evolving as an Artist
My music has evolved a lot over the years, shifting from Baroque-inspired piano to modern pop and EDM. Tracks like “Strength to Strength” and “Silence” are examples of this growth.
The former is an atmospheric chill EDM song that feels perfect for a late-night drive, with hypnotic beats and uplifting melodies. The latter pairs introspective lyrics with downtempo beats and heartfelt piano melodies, offering a reflective vibe for rainy days. These tracks showcase my journey as an artist, bridging classical influences with modern innovation.
Balancing Life and Music
Balancing a creative career with everyday life isn’t always easy, but it’s rewarding. I’ve learned to embrace the small moments—like a cup of coffee in the morning before a recording session or a walk in the park after hours in the studio. These routines keep me grounded and remind me why I do what I do: to create music that connects with others, while living a life that inspires it.
As I continue this journey, I’m grateful for the experiences that brought me here, the people who support me, and, of course, my four-legged companion who keeps me smiling through it all. 🎶
