How To Prepare Your Cardiff Garden For The Winter

How To Prepare Your Cardiff Garden For The Winter
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Let’s be honest, we haven’t had the best summer this year and as the days get shorter and the weather gets colder it’s time to start thinking about prepping your garden for winter. Cardiff’s weather can be brutal, wet, cold and sometimes frosty. But with a bit of planning and elbow grease you can protect your plants, keep your garden healthy and have it ready to burst back into life in the spring.

Whether you plan on prepping it yourself or hiring a garden service Cardiff, taking the necessary steps to prep your garden for winter so it stays healthy and making the investment in time or professional help will be worth it.

1. Clear the clutter and debris

Before winter arrives, tidy up your garden. Start by clearing away dead leaves, branches and plant debris. Not only does this look neater but it also stops pests and diseases from taking hold. In Cardiff’s wet winter weather decomposing plant material can harbour fungi and mould which can spread to healthy plants. Rake up fallen leaves, cut back dead foliage and remove weeds to give your garden a blank canvas.

2. Protect the most fragile plants

Some plants in your garden are more sensitive to the cold than others. For these delicate plants add a layer of mulch around the base. Mulching helps to insulate the soil and retain warmth and moisture which is vital in the winter months. You can use organic matter like compost, straw or leaf mould. For the most vulnerable plants, you can also use fleece or burlap to wrap them for extra frost protection.

3. Prune any shrubs and trees

Pruning is a great time of year for some shrubs and trees. Pruning removes dead or diseased branches, encourages healthy growth in the spring, shapes the plant and removes branches that can be damaged by winter winds. In Cardiff where we get heavy rain and strong winds pruning can prevent branches from snapping and damaging your plants or property. Make sure to use sharp clean tools and follow proper pruning techniques to avoid harming the plants.

4. Prepare your lawn

Your lawn needs attention too. Mow it once more but leave the grass slightly longer than usual – around 2.5 to 3 inches. This helps the grass retain energy and protects the roots from frost. Aerate the lawn to improve drainage, especially important in Cardiff’s wet weather to prevent waterlogging. If necessary apply a winter-specific lawn feed that’s high in potassium to strengthen the grass against cold weather.

5. Protect any garden furniture and tools

Winter weather can damage your garden furniture and tools if left outside unprotected. Clean and store garden tools in a dry shed or garage to prevent rust and damage. For garden furniture consider covering it with waterproof covers or storing it indoors if possible. Wooden furniture especially can suffer from the damp Cardiff weather so treat it with a protective sealant before storing it away to extend its life.

6. Plant winter-resistant plants

While much of your garden will be dormant in the winter there are still plants that will thrive in the cold weather. Consider planting winter flowering varieties like hellebores, snowdrops and winter aconites. These hardy plants will add colour and life to your garden when everything else is bare. Evergreen shrubs and grasses will also provide structure and greenery throughout the winter so your garden doesn’t look completely dead.

7. Spring prep

Winter is also the time to plan for spring. Plant spring bulbs like daffodils, tulips and crocuses. These bulbs need the cold of winter to trigger their growth cycle so planting them now will reward you with a display when the weather warms up. Also, use this time to plan any garden redesigns or projects you want to do in the coming year so you can start as soon as spring arrives.

Conclusion

Preparing your Cardiff garden doesn’t have to be scary. Follow these tips and you’ll protect your plants, keep your garden healthy and have it ready to go for spring. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or a beginner take the time to winterise your garden and you’ll be rewarded with a lovely garden in the months to come. Now get your gloves on, get outside and start prepping!
